Comments:  SPEKE ROSE QUEEN

I recently bought a programme for the ‘Coronation Rose Queen Festival’ held in Speke on 22nd August 1953. The Rose Queen that year was Beryl Josse, Other names mentioned in the programme are Ann Cawardine, Maureen Murphy, Margaret McNulty, Hilda Callaghan, Josephine Yearsley, Carol Kirk, Glenys Roberts, Barbara Harrison, Jean Mathews, Ann McBride. The programme also carries adverts for many local businesses.

There is special mention of Margaret Bryers, who had been Maid of Honour in the previous year and was elected ‘Miss Liverpool’ in 1953. She was the second girl from Speke in three years to win this title; who was the other young lady?

Does anyone recognise the other names mentioned and know where they are now?  The event was organised by Speke Community Association, Chairman Mr. B. Ireland.  I will send photos to Lynne

"Nealen" family living at Western Ave Speke (WHO WERE EVACUEES) at Deganwy during WW2 , but no luck, maybe you know of them or someone who knew them .... enjoyed the scouting photos , we had a troop at Deganwy linked to our own All Saints Church , I have created a site on them , here's the link .

COMMENTS: Hi Lynne
Would like to share a memory.
I decided that I would like to be Confirmed when I was 14.
When I went to Church to take my very first Communion and being unused to going out before my breakfast I passed out in Church and came around over a gentleman's shoulder facing the Altar. I remember thinking at the time that I had died and gone to Heaven. I was taken out into the Church Porch until I felt well enough to go back in. I just wondered if this same thing has happened to anybody else.
Such a great site.
Regards
Mavis

COMMENTS: Thanks for the wonderful trip down memory lane. I was brought up in Speke and lived firstly in the old prefabs in Speke Town Lane before moving round the corner to School Way (No 127), until 1962 when we moved to Mackets Lane. I went to Stocktonwood Road and Central Avenue and recognize many of the names on your site. I remember having to go to Garston to play on the swings until our own swing park was built on the field of Appledore Road, just behind the phone-box. Also have fond memories of going to Garston baths and walking home after spending my bus fare. Remember when Speke Boulevard was turned into a dual carriageway and playing in the mud created by the work. My old friend Pat Finnen lived opposite me but moved away to Sutton Coldfield in 1957. I visited her in 1960 just before she moved to Bulawayo in what was then Southern Rhodesia. I lost touch with her in 1965. Does anyone out there know of her whereabouts? Her father, John worked for Dunlops and her mother's name is Chris.

I learned of your site through Joyce Griffin, an old childhood friend of mine with whom I've been reaquainted through the 'Friends Reunited Site'. I also have a class photo from Stocktonwood Road, which is on my 'Friends' site. If you would like it added to yours please let me know how to go about it.

I married Garston lad David Pike in 1964, who was in the RAF at the time so we travelled a bit. Sadly Dave passed away in 1998.

My late parents, Joan and Tommy Spendlove had a fruit and veg shop in the Crescent from around 1973 to 1990, prior to which mum worked in Speke Parade, first in Hawley's fruit and veg shop and then Allen's Chemist. Do you remember them?

If anybody remembers me it would be lovely to hear from them. I notice Jimmy Barker has asked from anyone from School Way who remembers the Barkers to contact him. I remember Ann and Sammy and I've got a photo from the 1953 Coronation street party on my 'Friends' site. I think Jimmy is on it. I will endeavour to contact him when I can find his email again.

Best wishes for the continuing success of your brilliant site and to all.

Best regards

Sue

COMMENTS: Hi Lynne

Just been looking at the new photos. I've aged a lot! I can fill in some blanks for you I think. The picture of the men with Rev Allenyne and Derek Clawson. One is Andy Gibson. Lived in School Way in the Police Houses. Had two daughters Linda and Sandra. I went out with Linda for a while. The other man behind Jimmy Read is Reg Gorton. The photograph of the football team includes a picture of my late brother-in-law George Bayly, he lived in School Way and married my sister Joan. They emigrated in California. He died about 12 years ago Joan is still alive. The picture of all the men in the church hall. Back row top left is Ronnie Lunt lived opposite me in Greyhound Farm Road. Still alive I think. Margaret Moorehead would know. By the way the Scout leader with me was Dave McKie not Mike.

The scout photograph number 17 is Doris Norgrove the man is Billy Cooke who used to lodge with Mrs Sutton at no 3. All Saints Road. He ran a troop at St. Christopher's but came to events at the 16th too. Hope this helps.

I'll dig out some of my old photos and let you have them in October on my next visit to Liverpool.

Keep up the good work

regards

Paul McDonough

We travelled down in Mulligan's furniture van (this company was based in Hale road somewhere near opposite where the Fox is now) We had to wear full uniform to go into the village shopping. I did my cookery badge at camp. Swizzle sticks come to mind. I could send you copies Lynne, let my have your e-mail address.

COMMENTS: Hello Lynne,

at last I noticed somebody has mentioned the tennis courts in front of the church hall, (see Mike Henwood's signing) I thought I was the only one to remember the courts. I attended the youth club at All Saints hall and the club at St. Aidens, does anybody remember Mr. Adams? we used to play basketball in the hall, the games used to get a bit intense at times. Mr. Adams tried to teach us ballroom dancing, I could just do the waltz basic steps, all the boys were a bit "shy" I met my first wife there - Dorothy Catterall and married May 1963 sadly she died in 1979. I enjoy looking at site. regards to all past friends.

Lynne: George Adams and his wife Olive are living in sheltered accomodtion at the back of St Aidan's Church now and attend services whenever they can.

COMMENTS: Hi Lynne, happy new year, to you and all in the guestbook.

Just to let you know I have a new e-mail address. I would like to hear from the lady from the Critchley family who kindly mailed me with some news, but left no address, also I would like to hear from Carolyn Forsyth from Fenton Green, I tried to mail but no go.

Look forward to seeing you in church again soon. Tony
