COMMENTS: Very good site!! left Speke in '79, rarely go back, however visiting Liverpool this week (Nov 7th 03) feeling "rather nostalgic" and found this and another site dedicated to Speke. Lived in Harefield rd, attended Stockton Wood(63-69),Speke Comprehensive (69-74) Served an apprenticeship at Whiteley Lang and Neill (by the airport) in the '70's, but have long since left engineering.

I have very fond memories of my time growing up in Speke, and had a wonderful time in 2002 at the Speke Comprehensive school reunion.

Very glad to see optimism there after years of neglect.

COMMENTS: Hello All

Since my last entry, I have visited Dungeon twice and was pleased to see that there has been a big clear up. I was with my son and we walked on the sandy shore. Wow, where did that come from? It looks like nature is quickly taking it’s course as the Mersey becomes cleaner. I also noticed that construction has started on the playing fields at Stockton wood School. During a drive past in April, the old school looked very sad and it was eerie to see lights on in some of the classrooms on the upper floor.

A drive down Central Avenue reminded me of the old annex at the Damwood Road end of the playing fields of Central Avenue School. The annex was at the back of our house and if I ever took a ‘sicky,’ I could listen to the sound of the music class playing their recorders.

COMMENTS: Hi Lynne

Your trip through the old village of Speke has some great images. The old ship at Dungeon is mind blowing! No doubt most of your guests have visited Mike Royden's website. His History page on Dungeon tells of the Salt works, it's rise and fall, and the recent acheological investigation.

If I'm in the area, I always take my own trip down memory lane. In the early part of sunny April, curiosity got the better of me and I drove down Dungoen lane. I was disappointed with what I found. The parking area is used as a dump. The coastal road is strewn with litter and the area concealing the salt works is used for dumping and burning tyres! Thank goodness for memories! I lived in 83 Damwood Road. We had great neighbours: the Westons, Aires, Glazebrooks, Hopcrofts, Studleys, over the road there were the Campions, the Steads and in Bramley Walk I remember the Barlows and the Gortons. There was a fruit and veg van owned ,I think, by the Bannons. The cottage on Hale Road was great for groceries and sweets which were served across a scrubbed wooden counter top. "Twelve penny liquorice please!" One of your guests mentioned the sun which seemed to shine all day, every day. True!

I wonder if anyone remembers the chandlers at the bottom of Western avenue? There was that familiar 'heady' smell as you entered. Just inside the door, there was a machine for cutting the edging from wallpaper.

I am still impressed by some of the original architecture. Wonderful brick arches and pillars. Before moving to Damwood Road, we lived in a 'half house.' This was a house in the process of being built just as the war broke out. The council must have hurriedly put a roof on to speed tenancy. I believe this was in Wellbrook Close off Lovel Road. Ah well. Golden days!

Barry

Lynne: Hi Barry, I'm glad you liked the site! It's a pity you didn't come to visit a few weeks ago as Dungeon Lane was given a make-over and looks a lot better now! Will write soon.

COMMENTS: You may remember my mother Sally Martin who lived at 230 Damwood Road. she moved out to Warrington to be near her family ( that is her sisters ) where she died I still think it was the wrong move as she had so many friends in the church at Speke who would call in to see her. A special memory to the Clergy who was at the church when my father died, I can not remember their names but one young chap who would just come in and sit down have a cup of tea he was great. It may be a long time ago but I cannot thank them enough for all they did

I went to All Saints as a child and was one of the group to be confirmed in the cathedral in the early 60's. I got married in All Saints in 1971. Reading the entries on this site always brings back memories. Has Stocktonwood school been demolished yet?

They were there form about 1954 to 1997 and not only kept children off the streets and out of trouble, but also encouraged a great number of them to take up futures on the high seas.

Unfortunatly due to airport expansion were moved on shall we say. They are now situated in Garston and changed their name to that of South Liverpool Sea cadets.

Lynne: Hi Peter, As the Sea Cadets were not affilliated to the Church, I have no records to consult. But I'm glad you mentioned them here anyway! The airport expansion has a lot to answer for....
