COMMENTS: A cracking site !

I lived in Speke on Bray Road from 1958 to 1980. My mum, Vera, moved to Belle Vale in 1998.

Some of the memories bring it all back to me. The caravan at the bottom of Western Avenue, Oglet Shore etc. Brilliant.

Keep it up, it's nice to be able to visit such a well maintained and relevant site.

COMMENTS: Hello everyone from Speke, I was introduced to the All Saints site by Jimmy Young,I arrived in Speke in 1951

age 6 yrs, and went to St Christophers

primary and junior schools. Later attended Blessed John Almond for a short

time while waiting for All Hallows Sec

mod to be built.Used to go to Stapleton Ave C of E school for quoir practice.

Left school in 1960 and went to sea, I

married in 1967 and left Speke to live in Whiston Prescot and then Halewood Vilage. My Mum still lives in Speke and my sister Vera. I remember the table top railway bridge and the 7 ponds also Oglet shore and the Bluebell woods.

I,m a grandad now but it only seems like yesterday. I am enjoying the site and will return soon, regards Tommy Horrocks

COMMENTS: Hi Lynne, Thought I would just let you know I think the site's looking Brilliant. Can't wait till you've got it up and running properly. You're doing a great job!

Read the email from Jimmy Young. I don't know him but share the memories of the woods at Tewit Hall Road. We used to play there when my Mum went to the Electric Showroom on the corner. I also remember the gypsies and the fairground at the bottom of Western Avenue. One of our favourite haunts was 'the back fields' (now the Ford Road) which led to the Seven Ponds (now under Fords) and the turntable bridge by the trains.

M favourite was the Crescent Library with the polished wooden floors. Spent hours there when I was a youngster.

I remember Doreen Griffin (she was in my class at school). Still trying to find out if anyone knows the whereabouts of Brenda Coles or Sandra Lambert who used to live in Rycot Road. They were my close friends in my early teens.

Anyway will pop in again soon. Bye for now. Sheila

COMMENTS: Hi Lynne,

I went all the way through your guestbook, but unfortunately I did not reckognise anyone, except for Jimmy Young, who introduced me to the site.

I was born in Speke at 8 Fenton Close in 1948. I went to St. Christophers, before going to college. My mother still lives at the same address and my younger brother Kevin lives in Hunts Cross. My sister Maureen lives in Phoenix, Arizona and my elder brother Michael, lives on the Isle of Man. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers the 'Murrays' from Fenton Close.

Thanks for a fantastic web site. I create web sites myself and I realise what a lot of work is involved in maintaining it once it is up and running.

Keep up the good work and I will be a regular visitor to see how my old home town was and is.

Thanks for the opportunity to participate in a fantastic adventure.

Peter Murray

My family lived at 64 Liner Rd for ages, One of my uncles lived on Gerneath road until the mid 90's and drove the buses. I went to stockton wood until 1975 and then to Glen Alyn boarding school in wales for a year or so. I would love to touch base with anyone who remembers the Turners ( or me :-) )

COMMENTS: I am so pleased I came across your page, all the memories of Speke. I was born in Speke and lived in Western Avenue. Although I didn't belong to your church I loved to call in with a friend and just sit and enjoy the quiet. I belonged to St Christophers Church. I have read your guestbook and a lot of the names seem so familiar, so if anyone remembers me, drop me a line. I am now going to send this site on to my sisters and I know they will like it as much I do. Being the youngest I don't have the many memories of how Speke was before the war, but they have told me all about the war years, my family lived in Linner Road then. I was in Speke in May and called round to the church but it was late in the day and the church was locked. I am hoping to get back in the next few years, so I will be calling again. Thanks and I will be back here soon.

Lynne: Ann, most churches are only open for services here, but if you let me or the Vicar, Carol know when you'd like to visit we'll make sure we're there to open up for you!

COMMENTS: Hi Lynne, its a while since I have been on the site and glad to see lots of 'expats' contributing. Unfortunately don't get back much now since my Mum passed away just before Christmas. Our house in Linner Road has been sold along with all our childhood memories. I am just wondering if anyone might still be in contact with my old friends from school Karen Turner, Brenda Coles or Sandra Lambert. Karen lived near Ramsbrook Close and Brenda & Sandra lived in Rycot Road. These of course are their maiden names. I bet they are all married now and 'grannies' like me. Hope someone will be able to put me in touch. Look forward to 'surfing in again' soon. Sheila

COMMENTS: Hallo Lynne

Although I now live in London I was brought up in Wellbrook Green, Speke. I imagine you are mother of David and Barry and aunto fo Alan Rive. I was up in New Brighton for a family do and we had a look at your site and some other local sites. Very interesting. We couldn't work out where Delph Lane was; perhaps near Appledore and Dymchurch Road. Also were was Poverty Nook.

As a teacher of history, amongst other things, I enjoyed the stuff on the local school. Thanks for an informative and enjoyable experience. Regards to all your family. My sister, Monica is still in touch with Vivian. Keep up the excellent work; more local history please

Yours

John Dowling

Lynne: I had to answer this right away. I am the BABY SISTER of David and Barry, and cousin to Vivien! You probably don't remember me as I'm too young!

COMMENTS: Hi Lynne, The new web page looks great. It's amazing what happens with old school photo's. If anyone recognises themselves would be interested to hear from them.

I went on to Speke Comp from Stocktonwood but when it was an all girls school in Central Avenue. I could tell you many tales from those days and of the days when I used to play around Speke as a child by the back fields (now the Ford Road) and the Seven Ponds (where Fords is now).

It seems such a long time ago when my Mum used to come and give us biscuits through the school fence at Stocktonwood in our in our breaks then after school we used to enjoy going to play centre. I imagine there are still a few people around who remember that.

Hope you are able to carry on filling the site with lots more memories of our childhood. Regards Sheila Enamu (nee McDonald)

COMMENTS: Hi Lynne, thanks for your reply re. Fox public house. My father(Denny) goes dancing at the Community centre and says keep off his toes!

He worked at Dunlops until 1978 and left Speke to live in Aigburth from Tewit hall road after 42 years living there.

I remember the Fire station being in All SAINTS ROAD,and the Crescent shops being built.

We all used to go to the Youth club held in the Church hall, also I see from the photograph that the tennis courts have gone from the front of the church hall.

When I was in the scouts Mr.Frasier was the leader. He came after Mr Sutton, his wife ran the cubs when I joined.

will look in again.

From Lynne: Hi Colin, Your dad is a lovely dancer, and I never stand on his toes as he leads so well! Mrs Sutton was active at All Saints until she died about 10 years ago - she was always a very hard working and giving lady. I don't remember tennis courts in front of the Hall - anyone got photos?

COMMENTS: Looking for Speke Hall and I found your site. I was extremely impressed by the quality and information, learned lots. I was choir leader in the mid '70's when Bruce Leng was the Vicar, anyone remember him? Some of the lads in the choir at the time where Stanley Paul Stant, Ian Hughes, Mark Lehaney, Harry Williams and William Bates. If anyone knows where they are would you kindly ask them to Email me.

I remember us singing at weddings, probably because we were paid 50p and we dashed around to the Cesent to buy sweets.

We also sang at the sad funeral of the lovely chap who used to look after the church grounds, please correct me if i'm wrong Lynne, I'm sure his name was Mr Guy. As far as I can remember this was the only time that the choir ever sang at a funeral.

By the way Lynne, was it your father who was our cub leader? did you live on Western Avenue?

This site is an absolute credit to you, I have put it on my list if favourite sites.

Well done, you deserve it.

Mark

From Lynne: Thank you Mark! Yes, my Dad, Matt was the Akela of the Cubs, and I remember you from school and church. I will post a photo of Joe Guy soon, and yes, I'm still in touch with the Lengs! Will email you soon!

COMMENTS: I've just read the guest book, I felt that at any minute I would bump into old friends. Does any one know of the Browns,(Naomi and assorted brothers) who lived in Blacklock Hall road, or Beryl Pye who lived oposite. I used to spend hours in the library, and we shopped in the Crescent. Dad worked at Manesty's. Walks along Oglet shore with my sister Jean(Goodie in the guides) are a favorite memory, as is visiting Speke hall and lying on the grass in the moat. I was a brownie and guide too, but I never lived up to Goodies fame! I 'worked' (hung around,) at Critchely's farm, often going in to help with the milking before school. We had an allotment as well as a garden full of veg and hens. When we left, I had a little white nanny kid bought from the farm where I took the more obscure guide badges. I learnt to ride at Blundells farm near Hunts Cross, the bus ride and the horse ride came to less than three shillings.I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers any of this! Congratulations on a lovely site.

From Lynne: Thanks Irene, I'm hoping to get some more web space soon, and I'll add a photo of Mr Critchley.

COMMENTS: I was delighted to find the site so quickly, I was brought up in Speke until 1958, and I have often wondered what it is like now.My Father was a very keen church member, in fact in those days church services and sunday school were a regular part of life. I wonder if you can tell me who was curate at around that time, (I think his name was Roberts), and if he is still around. I have a glass ash tray with an etching of Speke church on the bottom. I don't know when it was produced, but I would be delighted to send it to you if you think it would be of interest.

COMMENTS: Hi!

I really enjoyed your website, you've done a fabulous job. I'm currently trying to get together a family history, and your website is particularly interesting, because I'm related to both the Critchley's and the Cartwrights. My Great Uncle Charles (Cartwright) has Yew Tree Farm, Aaron Cartwright was my great grandfather, and Thomas Critchley would have been my great great uncle (I think!) I would really like to use as many pictures as I can for the family history and was wondering if you have any of the originals, and if so, if you could scan me a good quality copy of the Greyhound farm with Thomas Critchley and his daughter on the steps. Also, if you have any more information or stories at all on either the Critchley's or the Cartwrights from further back, it would be great. Thank you for the informative website!

Sincerely,

Tracey Critchley-Thonfeld
